There isn’t powerful I can say about Truffaut that hasn’t been stated already. The man is a genius. You can sense his like of life in every frame of his films.

I never idea I’d have considerable interest in French film or culture. Hitchcock was and composed is my common director of them all. Once I learned how powerful Truffaut respected Hitch I became more fervent in his works. What a cheerful accident that at the proper same time Criterion released this plot. I mediate The 400 Blows was nearly impossible to come by. Before this collection, all Criterion editions had sold out.

As for spot, amazon has already provided all that you need to know. What is principal is the character of Doinel; a charming, infuriating, idealistic, romantic, ridiculous manchild. How many movies document most of a character’s life? Especially one that outwardly leads a somewhat ordinary life.

You can’t really categorize any of these movies as sequels since not that noteworthy is repeated. The consistencies among the movies ring accurate to right life. (ex. recurring characters like the grand longhaired guy, Antoine ogling his latest ‘apparition’.)

The only let down was Savor On The Urge. The character of Sabine wasn’t that enchanting, and you cared more about Claude Jade’s character than her. There were plot too many flashbacks too. But grand of that is forgiven due to the ‘discovery’ Antoine makes.

If you tend to overdose on life, then you must search for this series. The only other Truffaut film I’ve managed to gape otherwise is Day For Night, but I wholeheartedly support you to search for that too.

For my money, “The Adventures of Antoine Doinel” might be my well-liked Criterion release. Period. One of the reasons I respect Criterion (and not every choice is a slam dunk) is that it allows regular people to really learn about cinema. As someone who attended graduate school in film, I feel as if my education and appreciation has never waned due to the influx of mammoth choices on DVD. The constant improvement of special features and supplemental material adds a recent level to the movie going experience. This site alone has scores of pertinent interviews, commentaries, a short, promotional art and a 72 page book of contemporary essays and Truffault’s absorb notes.

Now, I had seen “The 400 Blows” several times–but I had not been introduced to the other 4 films that describe the saga of Antoine Doinel. And like some other reviewers, I will not dissect each disc–but leave some overall impressions. “The 400 Blows” is considered one of Truffault’s masterpieces–not only was it instrumental in initiating the French Unusual Wave movement, it’s objective a stout animated film!

And it doesn’t finish there. Every film, to me, succeeded on the level of entertainment. Some people contemplate that the later films are lesser works–and surely they are less critical on an individual basis than “The 400 Blows.” But I loved them. Any one of them, taken out of context, is worth seeing–if for no other reason than entertainment value. There is worthy humor, sweetness, romance, and effort to be had in the misadventures of Doinel.

Taken together, however, I assume this position is a towering achievement! It’s a staunch pleasure to utilize 20 years with the same director, the same actor and the same character! You study how these components interact and evolve. How often do you accept a chance to sit down and live a life with someone? By compiling the state together and watching it together–you are experience history. A first-rate myth and engrossing films, YES–but you are also growing and aging with a phenomenal director, his iconic antihero, and the film movement. The whole experience was magical and exciting and I definitely recommend it to anyone who really loves film! KGHarris, 10/06.

It seems like a ‘new, improved’ edition of “Gone With the Wind” has appeared every couple of years, offering the ‘ultimate’ in record and sound reproduction, and extras. It can become expensive keeping up, and frustrating (noteworthy like buying a classic Disney DVD, when you know a more complete “Special Edition” will soon render your “First Time on Video” copy outmoded), but the novel GWTW Four-Disc Collector’s Edition most assuredly deserves a plot in your collection.

First off, the describe and sound quality is wonderful. Warner’s Ultra-Resolution process, which ‘locks’ the three Technicolor strips into actual alignment, provides a clarity and ‘crispness’ to the images that even the 1939 unusual print couldn’t effect. You’ll honestly maintain your TV is picking up HD, whether you’re HD-ready, or not! This carries over to the Dolby Digital-remastered sound, as well. All of the tell-tale exclaim and scratchiness of the opening credit title music, tranquil discernable in the last upgrade, is gone, replaced by a richness of tone that will give your home theater a genuine workout. (Listen to the brass in this sequence, and you’ll watch what I’m talking about…)

The biggest selling point of this edition is, of course, the two discs of additional features offered, and these are, in general, qualified. Beginning with the safe “Making of a Story” (narrated by Christopher Plummer), Disc Three offers moving overviews about the film, the fabulous restoration, footage from the 1939 Premiere (and the bittersweet 1961 Civil War Centennial reunion of Selznick, Leigh, and de Havilland), glimpses of Gable and Leigh with dubbed voices for the foreign-language versions, the international Prologue (tacked on to interpret the Civil War to foreign audiences), and a 1940 MGM documentary on the “Musty South” (directed by Fred Zinneman) memorable today for it’s simplistic idea of the time, and stereotypical portrayal of blacks.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Gone with the Wind! Click Here

Disc Four is a mixed bag; the long-awaited reminiscences of Olivia de Havilland are more chatty than informative (with the 90-year-old actress more alive to in discussing her wardrobe than on-set tension…although a prank she pulled on Gable is laughable), and the Clark Gable Profile is superficial (A&E’s biography of ‘The King’ is far well-behaved) . Things improve, however, with the insightful, sympathetic TCM biography of Vivien Leigh (hosted by Jessica Lange), and a Incredible portion devoted to brief bios of many of the GWTW supporting cast, narrated, again, by Christopher Plummer (although I wish the filmmakers would have included bios for Ward Bond, Victor Jory, Fred Crane, and George ‘Superman’ Reeves) .

All in all, the GWTW Four-Disc Collector’s Edition isn’t perfect, but offers so powerful terrific material that it is CERTAINLY the one to gain!

I broken-down to consider that this Hollywood classic was for everyone. However, after reading nearly 300 reviews of the film, I contemplate that isn’t upright anymore. This movie is NOT for you IF 1) you mediate a movie must be as historically right as a history book, 2) you mediate a 1939 movie should assume the values of the 21st century, 3) your attention span is so short that you must only behold movies from 90-120 minutes in length, 4) you can only win politically honest films, particularly in terms of racial issues, 5) you are so Boring as to contemplate widescreen movies were made before the 1950s (although to be exquisite, Selznik originally intended to expend a special widescreen process for the so-called “burning of Atlanta” sequence but gave up on the expensive notion), 6) you can only procure computerized special effects as they appear in original films, or 7) your conception of stout acting is to be found in slasher or teen films being made these days.

GWTW is NOT a documentary on the Civil War period. It is NOT a history of slavery in America. It is NOT a record of perfect people behaving perfectly at all times.

It IS an adaptation of a original written by a Southern woman who, as a child, sat and listened to the stories the used Confederate veterans told about the dilapidated days before, during, and after THE war. It IS a worship epic, probably about the novelist’s grandmother, which reflects the attitudes left over from that long-ago time.

To criticize this film for so many unrelated issues is amusing. It stands on its merits as a masterful film that tells of bittersweet worship and lost fantasy. That it succeeds so well is a tribute to the actors and filmmakers of over sixty years ago.

When Alan Parrish finds an frail board game in a construction set, he has no clue what awaits him. When he and friend Sarah Whittle inaugurate to play, he is pulled into the game and she is chased from the house by bats. Fast-forward 26 years to when brother and sister Peter and Judy Shepherd launch to play. They free a now grown Alan from the game, but in the process release monkeys, mosquitoes, and a lion. They realize they must achieve the game to do everything return to normal. Reuniting with the adult Sarah, they attempt to finish alive long enough to do unprejudiced that.

This movie is a amazing fantasy/action movie. It starts out well, and the suspense continues to do until the climax. At the same time, it’s got some large one-liners and silly scenes to crash the tension. The entire cast does well with the material, including all the special effects. The special effects reveal their age today and are a bit more stylized then realistic, but they succor the movie well.

A word of warning to parents. This is a very intense movie. Even though it was marketed as a family movie, many diminutive kids will be stunned by it. Keeping that in mind, you might want to preview it before you note it to them.

This DVD is a perfect showcase for the movie. The record is spirited, and the surround sound puts you suitable in the middle of the action. There is a commentary and two documentaries from the special effects team that give you insight into how they brought the animals in the film to life. If you’re looking to acquire this film, this is the version to bag.

Jumanji is an action movie that gets it just. It has the perfect mix of character and yarn supported by special effects. Buy it up today and be prepared to leave your world slack.

Wow, can you imagine waking up on Christmas morning and finding JUMANJI under your tree? Talk about a game that would literally bring down the house! JUMANJI was critically bashed upon its release, but viewing it now, one has to wonder why. It has some lovely inventive special effects, and its premise is elegant in that you never know what you pick up with the roll of the dice. Giant mosquitos? Spiders? Aroused monkeys? A stampede of African animals? A crazed hunter? Floods, etc., etc. While the movie sometimes drifts off on unnecessary tangents, it’s unexcited a whirlwind of fantastical adventures. Robin Williams, the king of playing grown men who act like children, is remarkably restrained as Alan Parrish, a young boy who was sucked into the game benefit in 1969 and is released in 1995 by a young Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce. In order to close all the horrendous things happening, they must execute the game Alan started in 1969, which includes his now adult girlfriend, lovingly played by Bonnie Hunt. Of course, the demented hunter (Jonathan Hyde in a dual role as the hunter and Alan’s rather loutish father) doesn’t want the game finished. Smaller children may score themselves fearful by some of the catastrophies that plague our heroes, but for older children and even us adult children, JUMANJI delivers.

The video begins with a brief leer at various 1960’s era civil rights protests and the violence that often followed such demonstrations. Using footage (worthy of it somewhat raw) shot during the marches and demonstrations and narrated by Peter Jennings, the montage of video “highlights” of the 1960’s civil unrest provides a strong setting for the showing of MLK’s “I have a dream” speech at the foot of the Lincoln Monument.

The video does not demonstrate the entire speech, but it does point to enough to gather a splendid notion of its yelp. Perhaps the single most significant reason to gawk the video (as opposed to reading a text version of the speech) is to search for King’s change in tone, demeanor and style as he reaches the raze of the speech. As he begins to call for “letting freedom ring” he abandons his notes and begins to seemingly allege extemporaneously, and the passion in his remark begins to rise. It is a distinguished visual, lost in any textual version.

The video concludes with a brief explanation of the assassination and memorial service.

I have heard reference to this famed speech many times over the years but I had never seen the entire speech. After seeing the entire speech for the first time it was easy for me to attain that this is the best speech ever given by any public speaker with respect to: -sense of urgency created -references for all stakeholders -appropriate emotion and sincerity -skillful expend of affirm (tone, inflection)

This is a sizable DVD edition. The deleted scenes are hilarious – and some probably should have been left in the movie (like the “other peoples’ money – retract the day” scene) . The alternate endings are also exquisite wintry, but they definitely chose the best ending for the precise theatrical release. The retrospective documentary is also quite enthralling, as you obtain some insight into the production, casting, etc… of the movie, as well as the impact it has had on comedy fans over the years. If you search through the interactive menus enough, you will even net a couple of hidden features.

Dumb and Dumber lives on as a standout comedy film. It honest never seems to pick up veteran… I’m unprejudiced indignant to finally glean some bonus footage from this comedy classic!

If there is a film out there that has created such an rift among viewers as Lifeless and Dumber, I’d like to scrutinize it. It seems that everyone I know either loves the movie or abhorrs it. It is easy to notice why people admire the movie. The movie is outrageously laughable, and I contain most of the film’s critics will concede this. However, without fail, the number one critique of the film by opponents is, “but it’s so uninteresting.” This is like saying you don’t like Schindler’s List because “it’s too serious.” Of course it’s tiring,! That’s the point! Unfortunately, pounding the keys on the keyboard harder isn’t helping to characterize my sentiments here. First of all, this is not a movie you can only peer once. Determined, one viewing will narrative for all the “gargantuan laughs”, Lloyd’s airport fiasco, Harry’s bathroom adventure and the ski win accident. If you rank your judgement on the sizable laughs alone, I can peer how the movie could seem innane and childish. I suggest every critic of Slow and Dumber should observe the movie a few more times for the minute laughs. There are so many jokes and they are so clever that I rep myself appreciating the movie more each time I witness it. For example, in the scene with the space trooper (Harland Williams) the center of comedic attention is clearly the point at which the officer drinks the beer bottle burly of urine. This “expansive laugh” often steals the limelight away from the smaller laughs in the same scene. While handing the bottle over to the trooper, Lloyd accidentally spills some of the urine on Harry, to Harry’s definite displeasure. When the officer realizes what it is he has swallowed, one can faintly hear Lloyd suggest, “Tic Tac sir? ” It is subtle moments like these that pervade the movie and create it immense every time you eye it. I deem portion of the scrape with the movie is that there are simply too many jokes in the movie. Many of the more subtle, clever jokes secure overshadowed by bigger ones, leaving some feeling like the movie is simple toilet humor. This is a grave injustice. Perhaps the most complexing exclaim concerning the essential reception of Uninteresting and Dumber is the overwhelming acclaim of the Farelly brother’s follow-up film, There’s Something About Mary. The two movies are eerily similar. Both involve a road drag starting in Providence. These trips are in search of a woman who is contrivance to honorable for her respective suitor. In both, the protagonists encounter concern and comedic moments along the method. Yet everyone I know loves Mary, while Humdrum and Dumber recieves mixed reviews. The only principal dissimilarity between the two films is that in Dull and Dumber, our hero doesn’t come by the girl. Perhaps this is why reception of the movie is so clearly delineated along gender lines. Women, I can only choose, want Boring and Dumber to be a romantic comedy, which it is clearly not. Mary can be seen perhaps as fitting this genre because it has the textbook ‘boy gets girl’ ending (although my mother wanted Brett Favre to acquire the girl) . The fact that Dumber doesn’t drop into the obligatory cliche ending is, in my thought, a tremendous allotment of it’s appeal. Whether you like it or not, you should lift a copy of Boring and Dumber and see it fifty times like I have. Then I reflect you will understand that being humdrum is “genius, sheer genius.”

OCEAN’S 11 is a dependable time-capsule classic. The ultimate “heist” movie, starring The Chairman of The Board, Dino, Sammy, Joey, Peter, and the rest of The Rat Pack, this one is worth seeing honest to stare “the boys” hanging out together and getting into disaster.

The slack Fifties All-Adult ambience of Vegas is priceless, as is the hep cat frigid which objective oozes off the hide. Let’s face it: How many men could rep away with calling the President of the United States “Chickee Baby”? Well, Frank called JFK precisely that. Even Bill Clinton was never that swingin’!

The storyline is a standard potboiler appealing a group of veteran Army buddies setting up the biggest theft in American history, five Vegas casinos. Frankie ain’t doin’ no singin’, and the film’s a bit stupid though-provoking in spots. They’re playing it a diminutive too straight and serious, and there are less laughs than chuckles, and no sex, but the film was a product of it’s times (1960) and aloof had to score past the censors in those days. Peter Lawford is over the line as a forty year stale Mama’s Boy trying for the Grand Bag.

No matter how trustworthy the Clooney remake is, he won’t touch this one at all…There’s only one Rat Pack!

Call this an addendum:

After seeing the Clooney release of OCEAN’S 11, I decided to add a few more thoughts. Well, the recent movie is ALMOST better—more action and more pacing, better scriptwriting. In short, a technically satisfactory film in most ways, which is marred by the one thing you can’t save a tag heed on—the chemistry.

Although Clooney is ample (he swanks across the conceal like a Bond villain on vacation), Brad Pitt is appropriately and irreverently serious, and Carl Reiner is outrageously comic, the “original crew” can’t replicate the charisma of the Rat Pack.

Although the Eleven in both films are con artists and thieves, they are the antiheroes we all dream of. At the slay of the novel, you feel for the “poor guys,” who, after all, ain’t really that unpleasant (”Coo-coo, baby!”) . The remake hardly introduces most of the Eleven, and you don’t really give a Rat’s Pack whether most of them accumulate away with it or not. They’re only props.

Julia Roberts is curiously flat, colorless, and dried up as Danny Ocean’s wife (where in the current, Angie Dickinson was undeniably THERE in what was a really very minor role) . Andy Garcia is an heinous presence as the “proper guy” casino owner.

Both films are worth your time. The one has what the other lacks. In short, if computer imnaging could ever morph the unique actors into the remake, this might fair be the best film ever made.

“Ocean’s 11″, produced in 1960, was the first of a series of films starring members of the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy David Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop at the time. Lawford and Bishop would kicked out by Sinatra later on) for Warner Brothers and this movie was far and away the most celebrated of the bunch. Many of the actors who hung out with Pack like Shirley McLaine would glean themselves in various cameo roles in this film. Though Sinatra was looking for a film script that he and his pals could do together, it was Peter Lawford who found the book “Ocean’s 11″ and the rest is history.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ocean’s 11! Click Here

Although the DVD hide calls this movie a heist caper, the script must dismal as the most easygoing heist even presented on cover. The title character, ex-paratrooper Danny Ocean, who is played by Sinatra, calls together ten members of his dilapidated unit to view and conclude a multi-million dollar robbery of five Las Vegas Strip casinos and worthy of the beginning of the film is spent gathering up the team, spending time with a few of them to scrutinize why they resolve to join in and spending time watching Danny tangle with the women in his life and the boys tormenting their underworld backer. The planned heist appears to be foolproof and remarkably easy as long as everyone does his job. Naturally since this is 1960 and the terrible guys calm can’t really obtain, a few twists in the state are thrown in.

Surprisely, Sinatra does not give a very pleasurable performance in the film, especially when compared to his earlier work. Of the rat packers, only Peter Lawford gives a solid performance throughout. Even Dean Martin, with his relaxed style of acting, slums it on occasion. It is the other actors like Akim Tamiroff, Patrice Wymore, George Raft, and Cesar Romero who give the best performances. In fact, Cesar Romero almost steals the explain as the (almost) retired gangster Duke Santos who might fair demolish the boys’ Current Year’s Eve party. It is surprising that some of the best scenes in the movie are ones without the nominal stars.

The main dilemma with this edition of “Ocean’s 11″ is that it suffers from an identity crisis. You suspect it was intented to be a comedy, or a suspense, or maybe even a morality play but the script cannot effect up mind through most of the film. It is perhaps best to relate it an excuse for a group of people to design a movie and have a reliable time doing it and hopefully the film audience will join in the fun.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ocean’s 11! Click Here

If you like your crime films to have lots of suspense, action and explosions, “Ocean’s 11″ is not the film to ogle. If you like to look a time capsule of a bygone era whose likes we will not seek again, this film may work for you.

While there aren’t many stand-up comedians that I fetch to be terribly laughable, Doug Benson’s experiment with getting high for a month straight provided many chuckles. More importantly, it provided insight on the movement to expand Medical Marijuana in California and the DEA repression they face. This film could’ve easily become a documentary on the Medical Marijuana movement, and hopefully some filmmakers will do a movie that focuses on that struggle.

Benson’s 30 days of smoking and eating herb was inspired by the 30 glum days Morgan Spurlock spent eating snappily food in Smart Size Me (another film I’d highly recommend) .

I especially enjoyed Benson’s visits to places like the “420 Temple”, and a straggle he made to Vancouver to visit the “Prince of Pot” – Marc Emery. Emery is a feeble seed distributor and the editor of the obliging “Cannabis Culture” magazine (which isn’t available through Amazon, but can be found at most bookstores) .

“Clean High Me” also introduces us to some Medical Marijuana patients, including a young woman who first started using it at the age of 17 when she was going through her cancer treatments. It’s a crime that cannabis isn’t legally available to anyone who wants it for medicinal, spiritual, or recreational reasons. Pot is forbidden because tall pharmaceutical companies don’t have a patent on it.

It would be too easy to impartial write off “Neat High Me” as a stoner flick, for this documentary is both hilarious, poignant, and has some serious political undertones.

Doug Benson is a stand-up comedian from Los Angeles best known for his work in “The Marijuanalogues” and VH1’s “Best Week Ever”. In this documentary, he spoofs the notion first introduced in Morgan Spurlock’s “Natty Size Me”, by going without marijuana for 30 days, and then smoking marijuana for 30 days.

The most surprising aspect of this film are the two scenes in which DEA agents raid dispenaries in California. California, for those who don’t know, allows marijuana to be distributed legally if you have a special card from a certified doctor. For all of the hoopla over State’s Rights in the Terri Schavo case, I found it very alarming to sight the Federal Government ignore Californian’s State’s Rights.

Led by a killer soundtrack, and Doug Benson’s sinful humor and amiable personality, “Desirable High Me” is a spacious, colossal film.

“High”-ly recommended!

I was prepared to be disappointed but hopeful that Universal would do a capable job with this area. While it isn’t perfect, this collection of classic Hammer films (and some not so-classic ones as well) looks blooming trustworthy in this DVD transfer. Although “Brides of Dracula” and “Curse of the Werewolf” don’t recognize as dazzling as the “Panic of Dracula” (or “Revenge of Frankenstein”) each appears in what appears to be the moral aspect ratio. Universal evidently passe notes with the prints indicating the fresh theatrical aspect ratio (at least for the U.S.) powerful as Warner did with “The Mummy” and “Terror of Dracula”. There aren’t any extras to whine of but the image quality is solid. There’s grain evident in most of these DVD transfers but all of that can’t be attributed to the transfer itself as these were shot on stock that was grainy to originate with. Older DVD players (and some newer ones as well) may have a predicament playing some of these discs. Evidently there are reports (again) that these Universal discs can cause some players to freeze and lock up the DVD players which is related to a manufacturing command related only to dual layered discs. These discs would have looked terrific on single layered releases or on single sided dual layered releases. The reason these are being released like this is due to $$. Luckily, so far I haven’t had a predicament but I understanding the same thing with some of the other Universal releases and found out otherwise distinguished later.

“Brides of Dracula” has a misleading title. Dracula doesn’t appear at all instead this film focuses on Van Helsing’s (Peter Cushing) efforts to rid a village of a young vampire that has been inadvertantly released by a young woman. Although the script isn’t quite as strong as “Fright of Dracula”, the film has a number of memorable status pieces. Evidently beyond the four screenwriters credited, Anthony Hinds also had a hand in the script (as did Cushing and Fisher distinguished later) as he had to tone down the film for the British censors prior to production. In Sangster’s unique screenplay Dracula makes an appearence at the kill of the film to punish Meinster. One of the last Hammer films shot by the edifying Jack Asher, “Brides” looks immense on DVD.

“Curse of the Werewolf” features Oliver Reed in the title role. State in Spain, Reed plays Leon a young man adopted when his mother a tranquil servant girl dies giving birth. We know very petite about the father except that the girl was raped. As a youth Leon exhibits the traits of the werewolf while hunting and the curse continues to haunt him as he grows older.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hammer Horror Series (Brides of Dracula / Curse of the Werewolf / Phantom of the Opera! Click Here

The colors are shiny and intelligent. Terence Fisher’s direction is challenging as usual and the film is one of the more “adult” Hammer films dealing with a number of complex themes. Reed doesn’t indicate up until about 40 or so minutes into the movie. Featuring an current rich acquire by Benjamin Frankel(”Night of the Igauna”) and a chrismatic, considerable performance by Reed, “Curse” would be one of the few Hammer films to visit the epic of the werewolf. Bizarrely, Yvonne Romain plays Reed’s mother in this while Reed romances her in “Night Creatures”. Romain would have her last film role as Sheila in the classic mystery film “The Last of Sheila”.

“The Faulty of Frankenstein” allowed Hammer to adapt Jack Pierce’s classic monster beget up for this film when Universal agreed to finance it. Cushing plays the doctor once again. It’s one of the lesser Frankenstein films and the only one featuring Cushing not directed by Terry Fisher. While it isn’t the best of the Frankenstein films, Freddie Francis (cinematography on one of my celebrated classic anxiety films “The Innocents” and other films such as “The Elephant Man”. Director of awe classics “The Creeping Flesh” and “The Doctor and The Devils”) does a solid enough job of directing the film despite it’s apparent rude budget. “Unfavorable” features one of the weakest scripts by Anthony Hinds for the “Frankenstein” series. Cushing does his best with the material. It’s basically a rehash of elements seen in many of the Universal Frankenstein films including the sequence where the Baron discovers his creature in ice (which echoes “Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman”) . The transfer looks far from “Unsuitable”. With nice, robust colors and nice stunning line detail “Faulty of Frankenstein” looks extremely top-notch.

“Paranoic” features Oliver Reed in a clever thriller with as many area twists as “Psycho”. Featuring a script by Jimmy Sangster and consuming direction by Freddie Francis, it’s a memorable thriller but derivative thriller. It doesn’t measure up to Hitchcock’s classic but has a number of qualified sequences in it and a vast performance by Oliver Reed. A very nice transfer with rich blacks, “Paranoic” and “Nightmare” (another Jimmy Sangster “Psycho” knock off of sorts) both study positively pretty in this presentation.

“Phantom of the Opera” is Fisher’s remake of the classic French new. In this version the Phantom is played by Herbert Lom. The compose up isn’t as memorable as Lon Chaney’s and the changes in the situation along with the smaller scale of the production makes this one that gets overlooked. Although it wasn’t the broad financial hit that Universal had hoped at the time and the action lags a bit at the beginning, “Phantom” smooth remains a terrific bit of entertainment and has a number of first-rate status pieces directed by Terence Fisher.

“Kiss of the Vampire” may appear to familair to fans of Roman Polanski’s “The Plucky Vampire Killers”. The basic state bewitching a vampire cult and their attempt to launch an unsuspecting young woman at a “vampire ball” was the basis for Polanski’s satire. Well directed by Don Racy, the main weakness of the film are the unconvincing bats that attack in one sequence. Otherwise, this is a top notch film. The transfer for “Kiss of the Vampire” looks quite gracious with rich colors.

“Night Creatures” is a Peter Cushing period share that was retitled for the US market from “Captain Clegg”. Cushing plays the vicar in a town fat of smugglers. Clegg was a pirate in the area who was ultimately caught, executed and buried in the town. Using “marsh phantoms” to horror away those who might be alive to in their smuggling activities, the town is investigated when a man who had betrayed Clegg is found by the King’s Navy. This soundless brute (Clegg had his tongue chop out for trying to rape the Captain’s wife and for betraying him) leads the King’s men to the town where it is suspected that Clegg might be alive and tranquil in action after all. A well written period adventure, Cushing is obliging as the vicar and a young Oliver Reed does a nice supporting turn in the film as well. The film is based on the same source as “Dr. Syn/The Scarecrow” which Disney made with Patrick Magoohan (distinguished for “The Prisoner” and “Secret Agent Man/Danger Man”) which forced Universal and Hammer to change the title and character names to avoid a lawsuit. Well directed by Peter Graham Scott with a breezy action filled script by Anthony Hinds, “Night Creatures” is a film I hadn’t seen since childhood. My impressions now (as they were then) is that this is a terrific section of filmmaking showing a side of Hammer that was rarely investigated.

“Night Creatures” looks quite safe although the sequences that site at night are a tad flat looking and dusky. The colors are gleaming and colorful although the film looks like it could have been cleaned up a bit more for this presentation. Unexcited, this DVD presentation of the film looks better than the rare VHS copies I’ve seen over the years. Piece of the flaw with the film could be the age of the negative itself and/or the condition of it. It tranquil looks worthy honorable all things considered.

The packaging resembles the other “Franchise” collections Universal has place out with a survey through slipcase and images of the recent lobby cards in tiny print on the inside. A nice job of putting this plot together although, again, an extra disc with a biography of Cushing, commentary track from a Hammer film scholar (or fans) and the fresh theatrical trailers would have been appreciated.

Yep folks, I have to concur with other reviewers who have shouted BUYER BEWARE – unprejudiced as Paranoiac gets lively, the image freezes and completely locks up and all you can do is to obtain a sign of the accurate time on the DVD clock, then open the movie again using chapter stops to go PAST the lock-up, then reverse help to about 50 secs after the freeze occured … a astonishing carry-on for a suspense thriller, huh? And ditto playing it on the computer – ever tried to eject a disc when your computer is frozen up? The enormous tragedy is that these are astonishing, astonishing movies but the DVD quality is obviously a crap shoot (in fact some of those earlier reviews telling us how radiant the disc quality is are highly suspect … but Universal would never stoop so vulgar as to stuff the ballot now would they? ) To those who have well-kept copies – well lucky you.

What I will say though is that no emails I have sent to Universal (”Contact Us”! says their website) have been acknowledged, composed less has anyone at Universal Customer Services (hah) offered refund or replacement or EXPLANATION AND APOLOGY. Service? Heaven forfend! We want your MONEY!

All the other reviewers who have complained so plaintively and angrily have my fleshy serve – now affirm me, apart from Amazon’s willingness to replace obnoxious discs, has ANYONE had any agreeable contact with Universal? And indeed has Amazon complained to Universal on our behalf?

I can philosophize you one thing – the artwork on this collection’s digipak, that is actually embellished with a lobby card from the Claude Rains version of Phantom, only confirms what I already knew – Fill ME the studios are paunchy of career eager-beavers who haven’t a CLUE about any movies made more than ten years ago and even the original ones had better be blockbusters with gargantuan opening weekends and expansive test screening responses or these superannuated adolescents who populate the Studios won’t have any thought what you’re talking about … Peter who? …. Cushing? … what’s he done? Should I know him? Who’s his agent?

I rest my case.

I never believed that Michael Jackson was guilty of child molestation. Not because I’m some over the top or obsessed fan who believes that an icon can do no unsuitable…because that’s not who I am. I’m unprejudiced a 42 year extinct woman who grew up listening to some Michael Jackson tunes once in awhile. I loved some of his songs, and I hated some of his songs. But I was never one to follow his every disappear, nor did I eye every music video, or try to acquire his every appearance on TV. I was however always intrigued and captivated when I did peruse Michael on the camouflage or hear his music. He had a talent that commanded attention, and a passion for helping others, especially children, and I always admired him for that.

So I remember standing in my living room when I caught a examine of Michael on TV, as he spoke out against the putrid crimes against a child for which he had been accused. Unprejudiced looking at the injure in his eyes and listening to the power of his stammer, I did not sight a child molester. Whatever they were accusing him of, I unprejudiced could not contain to be moral, because I could not gaze one effect of guilt on that man’s face, nor in his impart as he pleaded with the world not to condemn him for something he did not do.

But the media certain seemed to paint a different portray of Michael Jackson, one that seemed to convict him early on. And it was so insane to me that so many people suddenly looked at him and talked about him differently, as if it was honest so easy to gain he was guilty. Because after all, if a man likes children, he must be a pervert too, suitable? And when he agreed to decide with the accusers for a vast sum of money, that seemed to beget everything worse. To many people, that made him guilty.

When the second case came along, it definitely didn’t serve Michael in his efforts to rebuild an image that had become so badly tarnished. And for many who had their reservations about his innocence before, the original charges erased any doubt. But not for me. My very first concept was, someone wants money–they saw him pay off the last family, so surely he’d pay again. Easy target. And as the trial unfolded, I watched with sadness as this once energetic and magnetic personality seemed to withdraw even further within himself, inside a cocoon of definite afflict. He was acquitted of every single charge, but he was condemned in the minds of many people and viewed as some freakish beget of contemptible (his obsession with plastic surgery only seemed to add fuel to this fire) . And you could allege when it was all over that Michael Jackson had become a different person, a shell of his extinct vibrant self. I can only imagine how betrayed he felt by his accusers, and by those who would hold the most vile of lies about him. No wonder he left the country!

When I found this DVD last week, I ordered it upright away and couldn’t wait to sight it, and it definitely confirmed to me what I have believed this entire time: MICHAEL JACKSON WAS INNOCENT! As was illustrious in the DVD, if he was guilty of anything, it was only dreadful judgment. But he clear paid a high stamp for that, in so many ways.

I only wish that this video had aired on TV long ago, to wait on combat all the lies and negativity that followed MJ even long after the acquittal. More people need to discover this DVD. More people need to know the truth–that Michael Jackson was a talented, compassionate, and caring human being, who had flaws unbiased like the rest of us. But he was not a child molester; rather, he was a victim of lies and outright extortion, and of the tabloid journalism that would follow him until he took his very last breath.

I can’t aid but wonder how differently things might have turned out, if this video had been broadcast on national TV sometime after the acquittal. Surely, it would have had a clear achieve on how people viewed him. And that could have had a major impact on the course of Michael’s life over the last few years. Who knows what might have happened, had Michael not felt the need to bustle away from the spotlight after the trial, and from a public that seemed only too jubilant to vilify him. But we’ll never really know, will we?

This documentary shows the Upright Insight into a display day “Salem Style” type Witch Hunt. The Target? A world notorious Star and Humanitarian accused by a spurious family, coaxed by the Law Enforcement, and manipulated by rating hungry world media Networks and their reporters…..

It’s An Impartial begin minded contemplate leisurely the Magnificent Gates of Neverland Ranch, MJ and lets you glance what the Media and Sheriff’s Office did not speak, or want you to know. I loved this documentary and watched it twice upon it’s arrival, and you will want to too. In addition, I appreciated Larry Nimmer taking the time to contact me about a possible delay of delivery and the fresh updated ending that was added with the Jackson Memorial services. I Serene received it very Fast and plot before estimated delivery date!! Thank you for such a Enormous DVD!!!

The Movie:

Every so often in everyone’s life, they stir out of a movie that they mediate perfect. A movie where you don’t sit through it and judge to yourself how you might have done it all differently had you been the director. I have a couple of movies like that, and “The Shawshank Redemption” is one of them. I serene remember clearly walking out of the theater in 1994 and thinking that I’ve unbiased seen one of the best movies that I’ll ever have the pleasure of sitting through. A movie so blooming and emotional that is perfect in its diagram of storytelling. A movie that is about how hope can never die. The movie earned several Academy Award nominations that were certainly well-deserved, but it left theaters all too fast. Over the years though, it has gained a strong cult following.

The movie stars Tim Robbins in one of his very best performances as Andrew Dufresne, a unruffled man who is convicted of the assassinate of his wife and is sent to Shawshank prison. It’s there he meets “Red”, a convict played by Morgan Freeman who gets things from the outside for a heed. He first sees Andy as he’s lead into the prison and predicts that he won’t last long inside the prison walls. Over time though, he’s suprised that the young man is able to survive and soon, the two become friends with respect for each other. Andy is not a man who “fights the system”. He spends his days in his fill level-headed world, a courage that the other prisoners don’t quite understand at first. Robbins has built this character in a draw that we the performance is not showy, but subtle. The result is that we want to know more and when we do launch to understand his ways, that only makes us want him to succeed that worthy more. I won’t go into remarkable more in the method of detail about the movie; if you haven’t seen it, I don’t want to raze any of the enjoyment of the movie; if you have, I’m distinct you already have your feelings about the movie. This is a movie that’s not depressing; it has a lot of life to it and I judge that when they examine attend at the 90’s, they will peer that this is one of the best pictures that was released during this time.

Yes, Warner Brothers has proven to made an error in judgement about their device of going about putting this DVD out. There was an announcement over a year ago, I believe; then previous announcements came later after the first delay promising a director’s commentary, then a Morgan Freeman commentary, then, in the final moments before the DVD is released this week…nothing. It’s a shame, as “Shawshank” is a film deserving of considerable more. I drawl share of me is tickled with the fact that this film is finally on DVD, although if this is the final product, there is no reason in my mind that this couldn’t have been released a long, is an pleasurable looking image. One of the best cinematographers in the business (Roger Deakins- “Fargo”) did the filming on this relate and the pale colors are represented well throughout the recount, mainly browns and greys. Like the movie, there is an elegance to the visual style on this describe that is apparent in every movie that Deakins has worked on. Images are obvious and crisp throughout; interesting, but not overly tantalizing for a “still” feeling that looks very film-like.

There are few problems, and none of them are terribly distracting at all. There is a small bright in a scene or two and some very puny instances of grain. Other than that, this is an respectable looking image that will certainly pleasing sound mix. It’s also a newly remastered 5.1 mix. It’s not flashy or showy, nor does it need to be. It does however, do what it needs to do best very well. The bag by Thomas Newman is absolutely astounding and it sounds sure and crisp throughout the characterize. Surrounds are assign into spend occasionally, but always in a subtle map that is suitable for the narrate. What I was tickled about most though, was how rich and orderly the gain sounded on this DVD. Dialogue is sure and without problems as well. Again, Non-animated main menus that have the accept playing in the dissapointment of this DVD; all that’s included is the trailer and some production stills.

Final Thoughts Although it’s downhearted that this isn’t the special edition that it should have been it is a must for any collection. I’m ecstatic the film is finally being realized by more and more people as a classic share of filmmaking, which I’ve always considered it to be.

It has long been my contention that it is the moviemaker’s task to fill the viewer’s attention, not to burden him with his self-indulgent, difficult-to-follow symbolisms.

That having been said, I obtain it difficult to collect another movie I would recommend more highly than The Shawshank Redemption. Without any high-adrenaline action sequences or steamy sex scenes (two sure-fire ways to accept the vewer’s attention), this film somehow has the power to accomplish you sit through all 142 minutes without for a moment getting bored. And I challenge anyone who has seen it to delete any scene, even any limited, from the final edit. The fact is, you can’t. Because every single scene is an distinguished element that contributes to the final result: a masterpiece that captures the drama of enduring friendship and resiliency of the human spirit more powerfully than any other film ever made. Even those who normally do not spy movies with a considerable explore will bag themselves so drawn into this experience. I really can’t say enough about this film. Suffice it to say that this is certainly the Greatest Movie Not to Come By an Oscar. (Since Citizen Kane, at least. )

Actually, I can forgive the Film Academy for not honoring this film with the Oscars I firmly bear it deserved. But when the American Film Institute in 1998 achieve together their list of The 100 Greatest Movies of all time (covering the period from 1896-1996), and so myopically overlooked Shawshank in favor of such titles as Rocky, Dr. Strangelove, Network, and Jaws, well, I idea that was absolutely ridiculous.

I wouldn’t hesitate to build it in the top five of all time.
